These enigmatic tokens, often cast in bronze or brass, bore explicit sexual imagery and were clandestinely used in transactions related to the world of erotic services. Because it was forbidden to exchange Roman currency depicting the emperor's face for such services, the Spintriae filled this role in the shadowy corners of Roman society.
